The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline in the province of Salerno, where mountains seem to cascade into the sea, creating charming coves, deep fjords, headlands, bays, natural arches, and small pebble beaches nestled around picturesque villages. If you’re visiting for the first time, here’s some advice:
Ravello, perched 350 meters above sea level, is famed for its breathtaking views from the gardens of ancient patrician villas. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Villa Cimbrone being particularly noteworthy for its postcard-like photo opportunities. The Cathedral of San Pantaleo is also worth a visit for its architectural treasures that have caught the attention of artists and writers like Boccaccio, Wagner, and Lawrence over the centuries.
Next, head down to the sea and visit Amalfi. Also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amalfi dates back to Roman times but flourished as one of the four Maritime Republics vying for control of the Mediterranean. Today, it’s the largest and most popular city on the coast, offering a wide range of hotels. It’s also a fantastic place to shop in quaint downtown shops while enjoying delicious ice cream or lemon granite. The highlights of Amalfi include the grand Cathedral of St. Andrew, the ancient arsenals of the Republic, and the Cloister of Paradise.
Continuing along the coast, you’ll reach Conca dei Marini, known for its rocky coastline. It’s well worth seeing either from the sea or by climbing one of the steep staircases from the small port into the village. Just past the village, you’ll find the famous Grotta dello Smeraldo. I recommend stopping further along at the fjord of Furore, an impressive and romantic spot with restaurants near the beach between two towering rocky walls.
Finally, you’ll arrive at Positano, often considered the most beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast. The view from the street reveals a mosaic of colorful houses that appear stacked on top of each other. It’s delightful to wander down to the harbor and see the silhouette of Capri island. Be sure to visit the Saracen towers, the majolica dome of the Church of St. Luke the Evangelist, and the picturesque Convent of Santa Maria a Castro. Then, relax on the beach and soak up the warm sun of the Amalfi Coast!
