Legend has it that whoever created Kaikoura must have been feeling incredibly inspired. Imagine the Pacific Ocean with its changing colors and playful waves in front, and behind it, mountains with snowy peaks standing tall. You see cows here and there, and of course, plenty of sheep—after all, we are in New Zealand. Add a dozen surfers searching for the perfect wave and a few backpackers gazing in awe at the scenery. But for the imaginative creator, this wasn’t enough.
So, he gave Kaikoura the prettiest starry sky you could ever see. Picture yourself enjoying this view with a nice cold beer on the beach while cooking a decent barbecue fit for a god. Still not satisfied, he added an even more special touch: sea lions basking in the sun on the rocks, albatrosses keeping order in the skies, and silent but hefty whales swimming gracefully in the ocean. And voilà, the perfect place was created.
Everyone who visited was happy and content—everyone except the crayfish, a local specialty. While everyone else enjoys their time in Kaikoura, these unfortunate creatures end up on plates and eventually in stomachs.
Though we’ve just made up this legend, it wouldn’t be surprising if something like it had really happened because Kaikoura is truly amazing! Spending a few days here allows you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. Places like Kaikoura can capture our hearts, urging us both to stay longer and to continue our travels in search of other hidden gems crafted by some whimsical creator for our enjoyment.
