Today, we’re heading to the sunny south of France, to one of the most picturesque cities in Provence, known for its remarkable 300 days of sunshine each year: Montpellier. The city’s amazing climate is thanks to its proximity to the Mediterranean, just a short 11 kilometers away. The popular beaches of La Grande Motte, Carnon, and Palavas-les-Flots are favorite spots for both locals and visitors. We’ll be focusing on Palavas-les-Flots, a charming coastal town often regarded as Montpellier’s own beach getaway.
Palavas boasts 7 kilometers of Mediterranean coastline, featuring well-equipped beaches that are perfect for summer fun. The town has made great use of its seaside location by creating a picturesque leisure harbor.
But there’s more to Palavas than just its beaches. The town’s quirky alleys, clear lagoons, unique cable car, and famous tourist train add delightful variety to your visit. Don’t forget to check out the peculiar, crooked lampposts that add to the town’s charm.
Be sure to visit the fishing port in the afternoon to watch the fishermen return with their fresh catch, which you can even purchase. Another must-see is the Redoute de Ballestras, a small fort that has become Palavas’ iconic symbol, perched in the middle of a pond and accessible by a scenic walkway. Inside, you can explore a museum dedicated to the talented artist Albert Dubout.
